To have and raise a family is the fundamental right of every couple globally. Babies born with IVF, or Donor IVF Cycle via donor egg, donor sperm, donor embryo or surrogacy are as normal as babies born with natural conception. Ultimately the end goal with each type of conception is a healthy pregnancy and happy family. Unfortunately, due to lack of awareness, most couples feel that a baby through IVF or Donor IVF cycle is artificial or medicinal baby having some medical or physical issues lifelong. But the truth is-

The baby is Normal.

Baby is Yours.

It is NOT an artificial baby.

A baby is produced from a mothers’ egg and fathers’ sperm. The same process is followed in IVF or IUI treatments. The only difference is, a little help from science is taken to detect & cure the loopholes of our reproductive organs.

Donor IVF Cycle: Using Donor Eggs, Sperm, or Embryos to Build Your Family

What Is Egg?

A female is born with millions of eggs, the quantity & quality of these eggs goes down over the time after hitting puberty. More the eggs better are the chances of natural conception. Lower the eggs, less is the chances of natural conception and you may need to opt for IVF or IVF Donor to have a baby.

Each month a woman’s ovaries mature an egg or ovum and release it into the fallopian tubes – this is called Ovulation. Generally, 2 days before ovulation, a couple is recommended to have sex until the day of ovulation for successful conception. Moreso because an egg, after its release survives for only 12-24 hours. If an egg is dead before ovulation without fertilization, the chances of pregnancy become nil until next cycle.

What Is Sperm?

Sperm is a male reproductive cell or gamete. The testicles are the male reproductive organs responsible for producing sperms. Every time a male body takes about 74 days to produce new sperm cells. The sperms don’t reduce over the time. After sex, a male sperm can survive for upto 5 days in the female reproductive tract.

What Is Embryo?

In simple language,

Egg + Sperm = Embryo

An embryo further grows into foetus which eventually matures into baby.

What Is IVF?

IVF or In vitro fertilisation is an advanced form of assisted reproductive technology (ART). It is a series of complex procedures to help infertile couples or couple preventing a genetic issue with the conception of child. It is a fertilization technique whereby the egg is fertilised with sperm OUTSIDE the body and is then implanted in the woman’s uterus.

As the fertilization process is done outside the body it allows the couples to choose whether they want to conceive with own eggs & sperms or consider IVF donor cycle via egg donor, sperm donor, embryo donor, frozen embryo transfer or fresh embryo transfer depending upon their medical conditions & infertility situations.

How Does IVF Egg Donor / Donation Process Work?

There are 3 different ways in which a donor can provide her eggs for fertilization purposes –

  1. Fresh Oocytes – donated directly after retrieval.
  2. Frozen Oocytes – frozen oocytes are thawed out prior to being transferred into the recipient.
  3. Vitrified Oocytes – vitrified oocytes are stored in liquid nitrogen tanks and later warmed up once needed.

The best resulting embryo will be selected for transfer. If you have more than one good embryo you can freeze the remainder to use for future IVF cycles.

How Does Sperm Donation Work?

There are 2 different ways –

a)   Donor sperm insemination or IUI – Intrauterine Insemination

It involves placing donor sperm into woman’s uterus around the same time she would ovulate naturally without any fertility medication. In this case, a woman’s fallopian tubes must be clear so that the sperm can travel till the egg.

Benefits Of IUI

  • Cheaper than IVF,
  • Less time consuming,
  • Less invasive,
  • Low risk, painless technique,
  • Sperm quality is enhanced due to the washing procedure,
  • IUI treatment increases the chances of conception when compared to regular sex,
  • Gets a fair idea on how your body will respond to IVF. If IVF is your next option.

b)   Donor Sperm IVF Cycle

The eggs are fertilised with donor sperm using a technique called ICSI (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection), where a single, healthy sperm is injected into each egg.

The best resulting embryo will be selected for transfer. If you have more than one good embryo you can freeze the remainder to use in future treatment cycles.

Benefits Of ICSI

  • Helps the couple who are not able to conceive naturally,
  • Most beneficial in male infertility cases,
  • ICSI improves the probability of fertilization.

3. Donor Embryo IVF Cycle

Who Can Opt For Donor Embryo IVF Cycle?

Infertility is a couple’s problem and while 40% of infertility cases are because of female infertility reasons and 30% are due to male infertility factors there is a sizeable 30% infertility cases where cause of delayed pregnancy is a mix of issues from both wife and the husband. The biggest issue is unexplained infertility and recurrent miscarriages without identifiable reason. Many a times, when the egg and sperm fuse together to form embryo it doesn’t produce healthy embryos for a viable pregnancy. These conditions usually get success with donor embryo IVF cycle.

4. Frozen Embryo Transfer

If you have more than one good embryo in one IVF cycle, then you can freeze the remainder to use in future treatment cycles.

Who Can Opt For Frozen Embryo Transfer?

  • If you had your extra embryos frozen from a previous cycle,
  • If you are opting for a donor embryo, fresh or frozen donor embryos can also be transferred.

5. Fresh Embryo Transfer

Fresh Embryo made of your own or through donor egg or sperm is used in the same cycle.
