Infertility- Why Does It Occur?

Infertility in females and male may be due to physical defects, physical debility, and functional faults.

In females, it may be due to ovulation disorder, uterine or cervical abnormalities, fallopian tube damage or blockage, endometriosis, primary ovarian insufficiency, pelvic adhesion, etc. And also physical debility can result due to poor health because of some chronic diseases, constipation (accumulation of waste material again). A decrease in the function of glands, lack of normal menstrual cycle, and obesity are yet other factors that can contribute to female infertility.

Psychological factors like emotional stress, tension, mental depression, anxiety, and fear may also result in psychosomatic sterility.

In male infertility, the underlying cause may be due to poor lifestyle, overexposure to certain environmental factors, and unhealthy food habits leading to abnormal sperm production & problems with the delivery of sperm. Naturopathy infertility treatment has been around for ages and has gained popularity in recent times. Naturopathy for getting pregnant has been one of the most common forms of treatment opted by several couples who wish to avoid strong medications.

The World Of Naturopathy: The Principles

Naturopathy can be viewed as a way of life as opposed to just a form of medication. That being said, Naturopathy follows a set of principles with regards to the functioning.
1.   The healing power of nature is powerful– all healing comes from within and the body heals itself. Naturopathy is to help ease this natural process.
2.   Treat the cause rather than the effect– seek the underlying cause of disease rather than suppress symptoms. Symptoms are viewed as expressions of the body’s imbalances on all levels i.e. physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
3. ‘First do no harm’– one of Hippocrates’ principles is not to do any kind of harm during the treatment and try to create a balance within the body by utilizing natural substances and therapies.
4.   Treat the person as a whole entity– A holistic view of the total body that goes beyond single body system treatments. This approach results in a therapeutic approach in which no disease is incurable.
5.   Regard the physician as a teacher– Naturopaths are first and foremost teachers that educate, empower, and motivate the person to take responsibility for his or her own health by assessing and adopting lifestyle changes.
6.   Prevention is the best cure– By understanding the underlying lifestyle imbalances and understanding body systems a person can prevent many disease processes and arrest them in advance with minimal intervention.

Treatment modalities in Naturopathy

In the traditional and authentic approach to natural medicine, therapies are done without the use of any drugs and by avoiding all procedures that interfere with natural functions or have harmful side-effects.

Every living cell has an intelligence of its own and has enough resources to overcome temporary disabilities caused by internal and external circumstances. The ideal way to communicate with the cells and aid the self-healing process is to do so using the elements from which the cells are made up of; these elements are Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space.

Naturopathy is considered as primary care that can treat everyday problems with certain methods and application:

I.         Nutrition– The diet is the foundation of Naturopathic medicine. The most important role in maintaining good health and in the prevention of disease is of Natural diet. The basic underlying cause of all the diseases is an accumulation of waste materials through years of wrong food habits, an improper combination of various foods, and a faulty time of food. In Naturopathy the food is classified as acidic or alkaline, live or dead food, eliminative, soothing, constructive, vegetarian or non-vegetarian, liquid, fruit, mono fruit diet, etc creating a sort of Naturopathic diet chart. Naturopathy gives more emphasis on raw food instead of cooked food. Having the right food at the right time with the right combination. If food is properly selected, rationally combined, and judiciously consumed, it will keep the body away from disease by supplying the alkaline elements in organic form. The preference of food in the Naturopathy diet is with their natural properties which will help health and protect the body from external influences and diseases.

If people learn to select the right food, combine it with the right foods, and balance their food suitable to age, occupation, climate, it would make a lot of difference in their health. Naturopathy believes that ‘food has a greater influence on the mind, everything we eat and drink is transported by the blood which reflects in the nervous system.
II.       Herbal medicine– plants have been used for thousands of years and have known benefits for balancing body systems. Most naturopaths recognize the need for conventional drugs only for emergency medicine and for short-term use but work with natural substances to restore harmony and balance.

III.    Acupuncture- acupressure: stimulating the “chi” by opening pathways of energy to restore balance.
IV.    Hydrotherapy- using hot/cold pack, hip bath, immersion bath, spinal bath, sitz baths, steam bath, saunas, whirlpools, poultices, castor oil packs, mud packs, herbal packs, and enemas to maintain health and prevent disease.
V.      Yoga therapy– therapeutic yoga is an inherently holistic approach, simultaneously working on the body, mind, and spirit utilizing poses, breathing techniques, and meditation to benefit and improve overall health.
VI.    Counselling on lifestyle modification-understanding what you may be doing to cause your symptoms and help you make changes in your lifestyle.
VII. Physical Medicine– which involves massages therapeutic touch, reiki, ultrasound, magnet, and light therapy.
Even though Naturopathic principles are as old as history, they are as new as tomorrow because nature and truth never change. Any system that cured people years ago will help people today, and we can now scientifically validate and explain the clinical success of these approaches.

What Are The Treatment Modalities in Naturopathy?

Structural defects can be ascertained through physical examination and radiology and can be set right by surgery. Physical debility and the functional faults of organic nature can be cured by simple and effective methods of natural treatment. These methods include hygienic living, optimum nutrition, and following the laws of nature.

  • Fasting is the best remedy for the treatment of disorders resulting from toxin accumulation in the system. A short fast of two or three days should be undertaken at regular intervals by women who are unable to bear children. The bowels should be cleansed by a warm-water enema during the period of fasting and afterward when necessary. This will have a beneficial effect not only on the digestive system but also on the surrounding organs of the urinary and genital system.
  • Diet is the most important factor in the treatment of Infertility it should consist of three basic health-building food groups namely (i) seeds, nuts, and grains, (ii) vegetables, and (iii) fruits. About 70 to 80% of the diet should consist of foods in their natural uncooked states because cooking destroys much of the nutritional values of the food.

Excessive fat, spicy foods, strong tea, coffee, white sugar, white flour, refined cereals, flesh foods, greasy or fried foods should be avoided. Smoking or drinking habits must be completely given up.

Certain remedies have also been found useful in the treatment of Infertility unless organic defects or congenital deformities.

Other helpful measures in overcoming Infertility are mud packs and cold water treatment like hip bath and wet girdle-pack. These treatments will greatly improve internal circulation in the genital organs and will relieve them of all kinds of inflammation and other abnormalities. Mud packs may be applied to the abdomen and sexual organs.

For a hip bath, a common tub may be used. The tub may be filled with sufficient water to cover the hips when a person sits inside it. The cold hip bath should be taken for 10 minutes at a water temperature of 50 0 to 65 0F. For a wet girdle pack, thin underwear wrung in cold water should be worn. Over this, thick dry cotton or woolen underwear should be worn. All cold treatments should be suspended during menstruation.

Certain yoga asanas that help tone up the gonads should be practiced regularly for overcoming Infertility These asanas are sarvangasana, matsyasana, ardhamatsyendrasana, paschimottanasana, and shalabhasana.

All these practices along with the above-mentioned remedies with adherence to clean habits, proper rest, and relaxation help to overcome Infertility.
